Situated between the folds of Mount Dersa, Tetouan is a UNESCO World Heritage site due to the immense historic and artistic value of its medina.
Of all the cities in Morocco, Tetouan has the biggest Andalusian identity. Even today, Tetouan retains elements of Andalusian culture in its architecture as well as its cuisine and its dress. Tetouan also boasts a neighbourhood dating to the first half of the 20th century, whose architecture is considered one of the finest examples of Spanish colonial urbanism—the Ensanche.
The medina of Tetouan has seven gates and offers an infinite number of itineraries, as its rich architecture of Andalusian heritage makes it one of the most noteworthy medinas of Morocco. Mosques, souqs, zawiyas, and bazaars come together to make visiting this medina an experience you'll never forget.
Tetouan also stands out for its cultural buildings like the School of Fine Arts, the Skala Ethnological Museum, and the royal palace, in addition to the various festivals held there each year. These include the Voice of Women Festival, the National Festival of Andalusi Music, the International Oud Festival, and the Festival of Mediterranean Cinema.
Tetouan, nicknamed "the white dove", is a city dominated by the colour white of its buildings, a quality that applies without distinction to both the Medina and the Ensanche.
